Should I Quit My Job?

There comes a point when work stops feeling like work.

It becomes something you carry home with you.

Sunday afternoon quietly turns into Monday morning anxiety.

Eventually, a question begins to surface.

Should I quit my job?

It sounds like a practical question.

Often, it isn't.

Sometimes we aren't only asking whether to leave our work.

We're asking whether we can continue living the way we've been living.

But changing jobs doesn't always change the relationship we have with ourselves.

Some people carry perfectionism wherever they go.

Others struggle to disappoint people.

Some slowly disappear beneath the expectations they place on themselves.

The workplace changes.

The pattern remains.

Perhaps you've spent years saying yes when you meant no.

Working harder than your body could sustain.

Believing your value depended on your usefulness.

Those patterns rarely begin at work.

Work simply becomes the place where we continue practicing them.

Sometimes the first change isn't handing in your resignation.

Sometimes it's noticing the life you've been living while trying to earn one.

Perhaps the question isn't simply,

Should I quit my job?

Perhaps it's,

What has this job been asking me to become?

And...

Is that still the person I want to be?

SOMETIMES THE REAL QUESTION ISN'T ABOUT WORK.
